In 1837, the town of Oxford, Mississippi was founded and named after the British Oxford University, all in the hopes that the town would attract a state university of its own. Eleven years later, that wish was granted with the founding of the University of Mississippi in 1848. Nicknamed “Ole Miss,” the university has been a focal point of higher education for not just the state of Mississippi, but for the entire region too.
