The site commemorates the November 29, 1864 attack on a village of about 700 Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho\npeople along Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado Territory, about 170 miles southeast of Denver. At dawn, approximately\n675 soldiers of the 1st and 3rd Regiments, Colorado Volunteer (U.S.) Cavalry, killed more than 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho\nover the course of seven hours. Colonel John M. Chivington led an unprovoked surprise attack on a\npeaceful camp using small arms and howitzer fire to kill as many Cheyenne and Arapaho, mostly women and children, as\npossible. The brutal attack is remembered at the historic site, where visitors can learn about what happened, why it mattered,\nand the crucial efforts towards peace that followed. To commemorate the paths less traveled in national recreation areas (these\nplaces receive far fewer visitors than National Parks), Anderson Design Group poster artists hand-rendered an original\nillustration in the fashion of vintage poster art and travel art.
