At dawn, approximately\n675 soldiers of the 1st and 3rd Regiments, Colorado Volunteer (U.S.) Cavalry, killed more than 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho\nover the course of seven hours. Colonel John M. Chivington led an unprovoked surprise attack on a\npeaceful camp using small arms and howitzer fire to kill as many Cheyenne and Arapaho, mostly women and children, as\npossible. The brutal attack is remembered at the historic site, where visitors can learn about what happened, why it mattered,\nand the crucial efforts towards peace that followed.
