When most people think of Alcatraz Island, they immediately associate it with the prison that once operated there, from 1934 to 1963. But the island’s history is so much more than that. The island housed a Union fort back in the 1860s and was crucial in preventing the Confederate takeover of San Francisco. About 100 years later, the island served as an occupation and protest effort by several Native American tribes during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. In 1986, the island was designated a National Historic Landmark and was placed under the care of the National Park Service. To celebrate the island and its deep history, Anderson Design Group hand-illustrated this American Travel poster art in a vintage art style reminiscent of the early-20th century. To learn more about the island, visit the Legends of America.
