The book chronicles his apprenticeship under a seasoned pilot, the science of river navigation, and the vibrant, vanishing culture of the steamboat era, contrasting it with his later return to a river transformed by the railroad. It's a classic American work that serves as a historical record, a collection of anecdotes, and a reflection on a bygone way of life.
