It is difficult to say with certainty, but some historians of literature believe that the Canterbury Tales are single-handedly responsible for shaping literature to the extent that English became the mainstream vernacular within Western literature, rather than French or Latin. Written by Geoffrey Chaucer between 1387 and 1400, the tales are an anthology of twenty-four short stories. Mostly in verse, the tales are presented as part of a fictional storytelling contest held by a group of pilgrims traveling from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. Savants of literature and all things classic, Anderson Design Group poster artists hand-rendered an original illustration of what we picture a book cover and literature illustration for the Canterbury Tales might look like.
