No one can deny the romantic nature of lighthouses. The symbolism Americans place on such structures is evidenced in the fact that, despite so many lighthouses being all but obsolete due to modern navigation technology, Americans still feel a resounding compulsion to restore, preserve, and maintain these historic structures. A good example of this phenomenon took place in Rhode Island. The Bristol Ferry Lighthouse was built in 1855 but decommissioned after the Mount Hope Bridge was constructed in 1929. After falling into disrepair, the lighthouse was renovated and is now a private inn. American travel illustrations and vintage poster art, like this original design from Anderson Design Group, preserve icons of an era long past that are still valued for their historic and cultural significance.
