About the Art
Durham, North Carolina, is a college town if there ever was one. This city is home to Duke University
and North Carolina Central University. The city’s colleges not only act as crucial institutes of higher
learning, but they are also major employers for Durham residents. And as the economy has turned
around in this southern town, the city has begun to revitalize its downtown, investing in culture and
history rather than suburbs. Our turn-of-the-century styled illustration of Durham features the historic
downtown as it looked in the early-1900s. Our American Travel art series is meant to remind us of the
special nature of our nation's cities and their unique features. This vintage poster art brings attention to
Durham’s pleasant Brightleaf Square.
