Lansing, Michigan

About the Art
Lansing has a rich and important history. For one thing, it is the capital city of Michigan, but why? In the early 1800s, Detroit was slated to become the capital, but concerns about its vulnerability, especially during the War of 1812, led to the abandonment of that idea. Lansing, further inland and a bit away from Canada and the Great Lakes, became the obvious choice. Pictured here is the Michigan State Capitol building, which dates back to the 1870s. The city also has a rich auto manufacturing history, an icon of the state writ large. Available in multiple size options, this whimsical poster was fashioned in the style of 20th-century vintage wall art and the iconic promotional travel posters that inspired family vacations in the early 1900s to Michigan, to the Midwest, and Beyond.
