Namibia gained independence from South Africa in 1990, giving the indigenous peoples of Namibia an opportunity to govern themselves. Since independence, the country has made a strong commitment to protecting the parklands, which is why visitors to Namibia can see lions, elephants, giraffes, hippopotamus, cheetahs, rhinos, wildebeest, hyenas, vultures, jackals, ostriches, zebras, and other creatures when traveling to and through Namibia.
