Turkmenistan is also home to three UNESCO world heritage sites, as well as incredible deserts, mountain ranges, coastlines, and historic cities. Speaking of historic cities, Turkmenistan is home to Merv, the oldest and best-preserved oasis-city in Central Asia. Merv used to be a major thoroughfare along the Silk Road, the ancient Chinese and European trade route.
