Voyageurs National Park
2015 By Michael Korfhage, Joel Anderson
About the Art
Voyageurs National Park is unique in that, even though the park does not border any oceans or major
lakes, forty percent of the 218,000 acre park is covered in water. This is because the park is located in
northern Minnesota, a region known for thousands of small lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, marshes, and
other waterways. The park also features historical sites, like the Ellsworth Rock Gardens. The gardens
were created in the 1940s by Jack Ellsworth, self-taught “rock artist.” The gardens feature eye-
catching formations built into the natural rock. One artist to the next, Joel Anderson appreciated
Ellsworth’s work, so he handcrafted a national parks poster, depicting a section of the rock garden in
the forefront and one of the park’s many lakes in the background. To learn more about the park, check

National Park Association.
