Harpers Ferry National Historical Park: Loudoun Heights Trail

Harpers Ferry is visually stunning, set amid mountainous terrain carved into ridges and peninsulas by two mighty rivers that coalesce into one course. The confluence site is the ancestral home and sacred meeting place of the Tuscarora and Shawnee people. In 1859, Harpers Ferry set the scene for John Brown’s infamous abolitionist uprising. It later became the site of significant Civil War battles and the birthplace of the Niagara Movement, the precursor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The unique landscape is visible from elevated positions, such as Loudoun Heights (pictured here) across the Potomac in Virginia. Accessible via a strenuous, 6 to 7.6-mile out-and-back hike, the trail rewards hikers with a secluded trek through hardwood forests and panoramic views of the town, the Potomac River, and the Shenandoah River from the iconic "Split Rock" overlook.
