About the Art
“A French masterpiece” is the best way to describe Les Misérables, an epic historical novel written by Victor Hugo and first published in 1862. Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the June Rebellion of 1832 in Paris, the novel follows the lives and interactions of several characters, particularly the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his experience of redemption. The book has been adapted countless times to film, television, stage, and music since it first hit shelves. To celebrate the epic tale, Anderson Design Group’s award-winning poster artists hand-rendered an original design — a classic book cover and literary illustration — to portray the epic tale.
