Nicodemus National Historic Site, Kansas

So much of the National Park Service’s work is about preserving America’s wilderness spaces, but it’s about preserving America’s history, too. That mission is exemplified in Nicodemus National Historic Site, located in Nicodemus, Kansas. This site marks the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the American Civil War. Formerly enslaved African Americans left Kentucky at the end of the of post-Civil War Reconstruction period to experience freedom in the "Promised Land" of Kansas. Today, Nicodemus represents the involvement of African Americans in the westward expansion and settlement of the Great Plains. To celebrate the paths less traveled in national recreation areas (these places receive far fewer visitors than National Parks), Anderson Design Group poster artists hand-rendered an original illustration in the fashion of vintage poster art and travel art.
