About the Art
Some of the best and most interesting wilderness places across the country are actually not that well known, and therefore provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy the outdoors without the crowds. This national monument in New Mexico is a perfect example. The Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument’s 496,000 acres surround Las Cruces. This rugged protected area features desert nature trails, petroglyphs, and archeological sites. American history was made on these lands by pioneers, World War II pilots, and Apollo Astronauts. Doña Ana county is celebrated for its open spaces and history. It is loved for its natural wonders, such as the scenic Organ Mountains and the southwestern Chihuahuan Desert. It is also a home to beautiful, petroglyph-lined canyons of the Sierra de las Uvas Mountains and famed western legends like Billy the Kid, Geronimo, and the Butterfield Stagecoach route. The area was even the training ground for the Apollo Space Program and World War II bomber pilots and crews!
