San Antonio Missions National Historic Park: Espada

Though they are all protected as one national historical park, the individual missions of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park are unique in their own way and tell their own stories. For example, Espada is quite special because it maintains a well-preserved and continually operating “acequia” (irrigation) system. Welcoming 1.3 million visitors annually, these missions are a UNESCO World Heritage site designed to protect the four Spanish frontier missions. Beginning in 1718, the missions became the center of a turning point where drought, European diseases, and colonization led Indigenous tribes to assimilate into Spanish culture, religion, diet, and economy.
