A spooky tale that has circulated for over a century and has been depicted in film, theater, and pop culture, The Phantom of the Opera began as a novel by French author Gaston Leroux. The novel is labeled as fiction, but historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century partly inspired it.
